CRAI's story began in 1973 when a small group of food retailers decided to join forces and establish the "Commissionarie Riunite Alta Italia" (C.R.A.I.) in Desenzano del Garda.

The partnership was soon successful, and the benefits for members, in terms of better purchasing conditions for goods, were immediately clear. So much so that within a few years, new members from other Italian regions joined. This led to a change in the cooperative's name to "Commissionarie Riunite Alimentaristi Italiani."
Since then, CRAI has continually enhanced its structure and store network, developing an increasingly national branding strategy. Its brand has become synonymous across Italy with neighborhood shopping, characterized by medium-small sales areas, and—most importantly—a relationship of knowledge and trust between the retailer and customers.
